“It’s an honor to be on this list with these legends, but most importantly we’ve won,” said Davis, who was 26 out of 27. “It was tough in the first period and my teammates I was just trying to be a monster on the window. “
It’s Davis’s first 40-20 game since 2016. He’s the first Laker to do it since O’Neal in 2003. Davis only played 31 minutes. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he is the first player to have played a game at 40-20 in 31 minutes or less since 1954-1955. Before Davis, the fastest 40-20 match was 33 minutes by Baylor in 1961.
Davis is also the fourth player in league history and the first since Michael Jordan in 1987 to make 26 free throws or more. “That explains why we went looking for him, he was very good for us,” said LeBron James, who scored 23 points for the Lakers. Los Angeles has taken its first 3-1 start since winning eight in 2010.
Davis was questionable two hours before the match because of a right shoulder injury sustained in Sunday’s win over Charlotte. He dribbled and shot on the ground before being cleared.
Davis had 16 points and nine rebounds in the first quarter but returned to the locker room early in the second quarter to have the shoulder checked and re-recorded. Coach Frank Vogel thought he might forced to continue the game without Davis until he saw him return to the bench.
“He ruined everything by playing in pain and was dominant, they had no answer and he was great,” said Vogel. Los Angeles lagged for most of the first half but took a 49-47 lead in the locker room at half-time when Davis grabbed the rebound, spun on the court and set the tone. “Everyone was playing well,” said Davis.
“I was just trying to be aggressive, it was a close match until the third quarter, I knew some of their players were in big trouble and I tried to get them out of the game.” Grizzlies vs Lakers, Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins agreed with Davis’ sentiment: “I thought he was very aggressive and you rewarded when you are aggressive.”
Davis said his shoulder was still sore after the game, but he thinks it will improve as the Lakers have a few days off. Memphis took a 15-2 lead before Los Angeles started coming back. Ja Morant led the Grizzlies with 16 points and Jonas Valanciunas added 14 points and 11 boards.
Morant, who was second in the June draft, had just three points in the first half before regaining his place in second. “To enter an environment like this, we have to play four quarters,” said Morant. “It was great to come in (facing James and Davis) but I was still trying to go out and play my game.”
