Netflix created the casting for the adaptation in eight parts of the best-selling fantasy novels by Eric Heisserer, author of the hit blockbuster Bird Box, by Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows Grishaverse.
The story centers on a young soldier who discovers a power that could finally unite his country. But while struggling to adjust his power, dangerous forces conspire against him. The thugs, the thieves, the murderers and the saints are at war and it will take more than magic to survive.
Jessie Mei Li will play Orphaned Soldier Alina Starkov in the series produced by 21 Laps Entertainment. Previously, he participated in Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho psychological thriller, which will be released in 2020.
Ben Barnes, an actor from Westworld and The Punisher, will play General Kirigan, commander of a magical military elite in the fantastic world of Bardugo.
Other regulars include Amita Suman, a Doctor Who actress, and Freddy Carter, from Pennyworth, who embody other gang members in a criminal world. Archie Renaux (Voyager, Gold Digger) and Kit Young (Endeavor) are also regular members of the cast.
The characters playing are Sujaya Dasgupta (Press, Guilt), Danielle Galligan (Game of Thrones, Krypton), Daisy Head (Rameras, Guilt) and Simon Sears (Winter Brothers).
Executive producer Bardugo said, “I have been very careful in this process because these characters have been living in my head for a long time. It turns out he had nothing to fear. Seeing these actors start to live these roles was pure magic. “
